Question: Hi Doctor,
My daughter is 21 months old.
She was fine till last night. Today morning she has vomited after waking up at around 7 am.
After that she had vomited 3-4 times. She slept again around 9 am and we had given her milk in the sleep which she was able to digest. After waking up again around 1 pm, we had given her meal which she again vomited.

Could you please suggest what could be the cause of this vomiting as she was all good till yesterday night and what shall we do now to stop this vomiting?

Brief Answer:
Looks like prodrome of acute watery diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hello... thank you for consulting in here.

By what you say I feel that this might be a prodrome of acute watery diarrhea or in other words your child might start to have some watery diarrhea.

It will usually start initially with vomiting and then proceed onto diarrhea which will increase in frequency and then gradually come down.

Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.
There is no need to use antibiotics unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

Understood that there is no need of antibiotics as of now.
But, do we have to give any other medicine as of now or just leave it on time to recover?
Also, are there any precautions to be taken in terms of her diet or water intake?

Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on diet

Detailed Answer:
You can give her Syrup Ondansetron 2.5ml thrice a day if there's vomiting.

As I have already told you, if diarrhoea starts, you need to avoid fruit juices and high sugar containing fluids please.

Hi Doctor,

I would like to know the reason behind the diarrhea because of which this could have happened so that we can avoid those reasons in future to avoid this situation.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on diarrhoea

Detailed Answer:
Hi...usually kids of this is age keep everything in the mouth and as such some impurities or virus can go in and cause this type of vomiting and diarrhoea.

This is a natural process and that's how they develop resistance to many organisms.
