Question: Hi Doctor,
My mother is 62 years old. For the past one month approx.. she is feeling itch in her body. Initially it was less or less frequent but, now she is feeling this itch very frequently and inspite of resisting she has to scratch it and the skin becomes swollen at that place which subsides after some time.
This is occurring almost in full body. Please suggest what could be the cause and what shall she do in this case. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Need some clarifications...
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
1. Is this the first time she has this kind of itching or has it also occurred in the past?
2. If there were similar symptoms - do you feel they are related to season and weather change?
3. Do you notice any skin changes also with itching such as redness, scalling, thickening and so on?
4. Does she have history of diabetes / hypothyroidism?
For the moment I will suggest to use adequate moisturizer and caladryl lotion and see if she feels better. In the meanwhile please answer all my questions. It will allow me to guide you further.

Brief Answer:
Need physical examination...
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Based on your description, there are multiple possibilities - dermatitis (allergic / irritation) and fungal infection are the most close possibilities in my opinion. However a physical examination is necessary to confirm the cause. I will recommend she visits a doctor / dermatologist for careful physical examination.
In the meanwhile she can try caladryl lotion on the affected areas. Continue cetrizine once at night for 3-5 days. Further management will be initiated after ascertaining the cause.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications.
