Hi Doctors, This Is Regarding My Grandmother Reports. She Had

Question: Hi Doctors,

This is regarding my grandmother reports. She had a tumor close to ovary. As per the doctors suggestion, we had undergone the open surgery to remove it since they have doubted that as cancer tumor. Its been 2 weeks we had that surgery.

The report about that tumor has come now and our doctor is asking us to take Chemotherapy. Also, they are suggesting to take the Chemotherapy for 18 weeks instead of 3 weeks since my grandmother is 64 years old and it will be easy for her body to adjust.

Hence we are little confused now. We don't want her to go into unnecessary pains if that spreading of cancer will happen only after 10 or 15 years. Atleast she will be happy and calm for those years. If its really needed, then we can go for that Chemotherapy now.

So I am looking for some second opinion to proceed with this. I am attaching all her reports here. Please check and advise. Thanks a lot!

Brief Answer:
Yes it needs chemotherapy

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

Your grandmother's reports suggest high grade ovarian cancer stage II. That means without chemotherapy there is a high risk of relapse. If we give chemotherapy then the risk goes down but never becomes zero. In this condition and stage, chemotherapy is pretty much standard.

Chemotherapy used to be 3 weekly once for six times. Nowadays we have the option of weekly for 18 times which has better response and less side effects. But it comes at the expense of more nerve damage and more anemia. Considering she already has nerve damage as per discharge summary, it needs attention. Also, we can give 4 weekly liposomal doxorubicin chemotherapy for six cycles rather than paclitaxel carboplatin, which reduces nerve damage. You can discuss this with her doctor.

Hope this helps.

Brief Answer:
Yes consider that option

Detailed Answer:
I would make a slight correction, it would be liposomal doxorubicin plus carboplatin and not only liposomal doxorubicin.
