Question: Hi,

Four days back, My wife(35 years old) spitted saliva(1.5-2 teaspoon) mixed with old blood(maroon color) and clot in the morning while waking up along with dry throat. She doesn't have any other symptoms. On previous night, she had spicy food and she has complains about wisdom tooth discomfort too. After this, she started following alkaline diet and does not have any acidity related symptoms so far.

Previous episode
1.5 years back, She spitted saliva mixed with old blood and clot in the morning while waking up. At that time, she had acidity related symptoms, that included tongue dryness, irritation between throat and stomach while burping only after having spicy food, and sense of something stuck inside the throat only after driking tea. Our General Physician prescribed medicine to treat acidity and suggested her to avoid spicy food. She took the medicines and followed the instructions by avoiding tea, spicy food containing tamarind/ginger and symptoms completely relieved within a week. She had wisdom tooth discomfort at that time too.

Medical History
In past 2 years, she had spitted saliva mixed with blood twice so far without any symptoms like vomitting/blood in stool/cough. She is able to control acidity related problem by avoiding the allergens, in her case - ginger, tamarind and tea.

3 years back, she took vitamin-c tablet for a week and only after that she started noticing acidity related symptoms for couple of days which subsequently releived after avoiding allergens.

Let me know if you need any additional details in terms of medical history to provide your opinion.

Thanks
Rajesh

Brief Answer:
hello

Detailed Answer:

Hi,
Welcome to HCM. Thank you for your query.
I understand your concern.
Well small amount of blood in sputum especially after straining and coughing is ok when not associated with cough fever vomiting difficulty in swallowing then should not be a matter of concern. If this recurs or associated with cough, fever , dysphagia, odynophagia, vomiting, weight loss or persistent neck pain then worthwhile doing a cbc esr chest xray and endoscopy after consulting with your local doctor.
Try following things in addition
1) eat on time
2) don't lye down till 2 hrs after meals
3) avoid pain killers excess tea coffee spicy food and aerated drinks
4) ensure adequate water intake
5) avoid straining to clear your throat

Hope this answers your query
Best wishes

Sure Doctor, If this recurs accompanied with cough, fever , dysphagia, odynophagia, vomiting, weight loss or persistent neck pain then we will definitely consult our local doctor.

You're right, She does clear her throat quite often.

Just one last question - She experiences throat dryness on the right side, while waking up, but rest of the day, it's fine. Please advice.

Thank you for your speedy response. Have a nice day!
