Hi How Can A Doctor Know Whether An Obstruction In
How can a doctor know whether an obstruction in a vessel is caused by calcification, plaque or something else?
I am asking because vitamin K2 helped me get rid of a lot of symptoms I used to have. However, doctors recently took a chest CT with contrast and say they found a pulmonary embolism and have put me on dalteparin. The obstruction in my lungs were a random discovery (as a result of them looking for something wrong in my liver due to some blood tests, seeing something weird in my lungs instead and taking a CT to check what). I have had no problems with breathing, chest pain or any other typical symptoms of pulmonary embolism.
Is a CT with contrast sufficient to conclude that the obstructions in my lungs are caused by blood clots and not something else?

CT contrast can help to determine the blood supply or perfusion to lungs
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on Ask A Doctor forum.
The CT with contrast is done to check the perfusion or blood supply to the lungs.
It can identify the presence of absence of clots in blood vessels.
Thanks and take care

But... that doesn't really answer my question. I understand that it can identify the presence of blood clots, but what if the obstruction is caused by something else? Which tests do I have to ask the doctor to perform to ensure that I don't, for instance, have a case of extreme calcification? (unless, of course, there's a different explanation for why vitamin K2 stopped my constantly dripping nose and dry mouth.. which I had for about 15 years)

Clotting in body can be predicted by D-dimer and FDP.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome again,
For clots in blood vessels any where in body, there are certain investigations like D-dimer and FDP.
These investigations predict the likelihood of thrombosis.
Deficiency of vitamin K can lead to bleeding from nose and other parts of body.
Vitamin K is involved in coagulation pathway.
Correction of vitamin K deficiency leads to correction of bleeding.
Thanks and take care

However, regarding vitamin K, isn't coagulation the duties of K1? I thought K2 was primarily involved in decalcifying soft tissues.

Vitamin K complex is involved in coagulation pathway
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome again,
The vitamin K complex is involved in coagulation pathway.
Deficiency of vitamin K complex leads to bleeding from various sites, however, it is primarily vitamin K1 which has role in coagulation.
Thanks and take care
