Question: Hi I am 32 years old in good health. I have a mild case of cerebral palsy. The only real outward sign of the disorder is I walk with a slight limp on my left side. I am high functioning (masters degree) and completely independent. I have always noticed one other symptom. I constantly dealing with excessive saliva. This is extremely inconvenient in the work setting when giving presentation. Is there currently any treatment I can look into for the excessive saliva. Thank you in advance for your time and effort.

Brief Answer:
Botulinum toxin is the best.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. For excessive salivation (sialorrhea), there are various treatments available. Some medicines such as trihexiphenidyl or glycopyrrolate does help some patients, however, medicines need to be taken daily and there could be side effects such as dryness of mouth.

For long term benefit, botulinum toxin injections (botox) can be taken. These are safe and work for 3-6 months, after which some people may need repeat injections.

I sincerely hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
