Question: Hi, I am a 22 year old female. For the past two weeks I have had swollen tonsils with tonsil stones. The infection has spread to my throat and mouth. I went to a doctor and it was deemed a viral infection and was prescribed steroids. The steroids had no effect and have not gone back to the doctor yet. It feels like the inside of my cheek is tearing and it hurts to swallow, and swelling in the cheeks and neck. The pain started on one the left tonsil and spread to the right. I have regularly made out with my boyfriend but he has yet to show any symptoms. I have had problems in the past with my tonsil and have 2 extra ones behind my regular ones

Detailed Answer:
Hii. You are having acute tonsillitis which is infection of the tonsils. As you have similar symptoms is the past then you are having recurrent tonsillitis. You need to attend an Ent surgeon. Take a throat swab and send for culture and sensitivity to the microbiology laboratory. Start an antibiotic augmentin amoxycillin clavulanic acid to prevent further spread of infection. Take antiallergic tablet solvin or fexofenadine. These are prescription drugs. Start betadine gargle as it will prevent growth of bacterial organism in the tonsils and will help in healing. Take paracetamol tablet to decrease pain. Continue oral feed preferably warm liquids. It will pain but you should be patient and continue the medication and it will get resolved. After culture report comes you can modify the antibiotic and take according to antibiotic in the sensitivity report. Till then follow the medication. Please review if you have any queries.

Detailed Answer:
Hii. You are having allergic tonsillitis which is recurrent in nature. Sometimes recurrent tonsillitis get more serious and more painful in nature. You follow the previous advice. Send throat swab for culand sensitivity. Try to rule out diphtheria from throat swab also. If you cannot take anything orally then you may need to admit in a hospital and start intravenous fluid and antibiotic. But if you can take orally sufficiently then take oral medications and more oral fluids. If you are getting recurrent tonsillitis more than 5-7 episodes per year then after 2 months when tonsillitis get resolved then you need tonsillectomy to remove the tonsils. Follow the advice and review if you have any queries.

Detailed Answer:
Do betadine gargle or chlorhexidine gargle. Don't use any steroids as it can cause more infection. You can use candid mouth paint to decrease further infection. Take vitamin supplements like zevit or zincovit tablet. Do warm saline gargle also. It may be painful. Take more fluid specially warm liquid. Review if you have any queries.
