Question: Hi, I am a 28 year healthy fit male. About two weeks ago in the gym when I was lifting a heavy weight I got this sudden pain in the back of my neck/head which lasted approx 30-40mins. Then about a week later during intercourse I got the exact same pain as I was about to climax. This lasted about an hour to two hours.

Have I strained something in my neck or is this just a result of a rush of blood to the head?

Brief Answer:
it could have been secondary to the muscle strain in the back of the neck...

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through your query in details...
I can understand your concerns...

Well, from your description it seemed like a muscular strain only...Could be secondary to that weight-lifting session in the gym...

The area perhaps was already sore, remain unnoticed, while climaxing our body muscles go into the phase of extreme contraction, which perhaps made it stressed further hence caused the pain...

I'd recommend taking a break from the gym session for the brief while, take some rest, do a bit free hand exercises, neck movement at normal condition and see if neck extension, bending is painful or not...Do feel/press around the area to see if it's still sore...

If it is, then you can start taking a mild analgesic i.e. ACETAMINOPHEN (eg. Tylenol), can be taken up to thrice daily after some food...apply a bit of local analgesic i.e. Diclofenac Spray over the area gently (don't massage), and keep the neck at a relaxed position...

With all these, you should be feeling better within a while only...In case the pain further deteriorates or tends to get noticed even during normal daily activities, then I'd recommend getting it checked up once any local physician for further evaluation...

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take Care
Kind Regards
