Question: Hi,

I am a 31 yr old female. I have thinning hair and a visible bald patch on my head for many years now- since I was 18. I checked with my gynac and I do not have PCOD. All my hormonal tests are also normal and my period is regular. However, I do have coarse facial hair on my chin & neck. I have tried everything from Richfeel to Dr Batras to famous dermatologists to laser. Nothing seems to work. My mother also has thin scanty hair but she developed it much later in life (post 45) due to the excessive use of hair XXXXXXX

How do I solve this problem? I use toppik powder regularly to hide the patches as I have no choice.

Brief Answer:
Regarding thinning of scalp hair

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have gone through your query and here is my advice.

You seem to have androgenetic alopecia which is characterized by thinning of scalp hair. You can upload photo of the skin problem. Also upload reports of tests done.

Androgenetic alopecia mainly affects the crown of the scalp, however, unlike in males the anterior hair line does not recede in a female. In these cases I suggest to use Minoxidil 5% solution, 1ml, twice daily. In addition I suggest you to take oral finasteride 2.5 to 5mg tablet once a day. Both of these are approved remedies for androgenetic alopecia. Treatment is long term. Goal is to arrest further progress as well as induce new growth..

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you need any more assistance.
