Hi, I Am A 62 Year Old Lady That Exercise's

Question: Hi, I am a 62 year old lady that exercise's everyday. The only medication that I take is Levothyroxine (125mg a day) for an under active thyroid. I have fruit and vegetables every day. I am slightly over weight. I had a private Liver test done as I have read that taking Levothyroxine (125mg a day) can raise your Gamma GT levels. Is this true? The GGT came back at 62, is this any thing to be concerned about? Is it way to high? and what should it be?, I did not fast for the test. Will Milk thistle help lower the GGT levels? Many thanks
Brief Answer:
You may need to do further liver tests.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
Having GGT 62 UI/L is elevated and may signify any liver issues.
Levothyroxine may cause elevation of liver enzymes but not especially GGT.
You may need to do also other liver tests such transaminases ALT,AST, bilirubin levels direct and indirect also ALT.
I think also you may need to do an ultrasound and test for viral hepatitis .
Not fasting for the test will not alter the test results.
Milk thistle is known to improve liver health so you can use it's supplements.
Hope I have answered the question.

Hi Dr. Xhufka
Thank you very much for your response, I have attached the test report that seems to show that ALT,AST, bilirubin levels direct and indirect also ALT are ok, can your confirm this is the case? Is my GGT being 62 very high, or just elevated and can life style changes bring it down? Also what are the symptoms of viral hepatitis? as I don't have symptoms and feel very well. Many thanks in advance Marion
