Question: Hi, I am curious if I have throat cancer. I have red spot (like inflamed taste buds) on my tongue also my tongue has a little bit of a white layer towards the back of it. over the past week or so i have been experiencing a sore throat and whenever I swallow it feels like something is trying to go down but never actually does. I have also recently been coughing occasionally. I have made an appointment with an ear nose and throat doctor but just want some more opinions.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Possible viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for trusting us with your health-related questions.

I understand your concern. A cough, sore throat and a lump in the throat can certainly be signs of throat cancer, however, these symptoms, as well as red spots and layers on the tongue make it more likely to be a viral infection. What usually causes this kind of infection is an enterovirus.

Until your appointment with the doctor, Tylenol, as well as ice cubes and lozenges, can help relieve the pain and inflammation.

I hope this answers your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.
