Hi I Am Following Up To My Last Post With
I am following up to my last post with a separate question. I have been officially diagnosed with Hashimotos as of last week by my MD. My labs ran originally by my dermatologist showed high antibodies (TPO, etc) but all other labs are in normal range, although low (TSH, etc). I have high inflammation as shown on other tests (ANA). This is normal because I also have CIDP. The thyroid issue was discovered due to hair loss for months and then brain fog, fatigue, and a consistent weight gain. I've improved my brain fog and fatigue levels a bit from where they were, which was unbearable, without thyroid meds, with supplements including the recommended Selenium.Through the labwork, we have also discovered borderline anemia and it's not related to iron, B12, or absorption. I have a colonoscopy scheduled to rule out a few things.
Vitamin D, and Hormones checked were all ok.
I have a thyroid ultrasound scheduled for next week. So far, my MD hasn't put me on any thyroid medicine. I think he's waiting the full diagnostics, but I am not sure his intent. However, I noticed this week a new symptom- I've been feeling for a bit that my neck is swollen or tight for some time now (off and on). The last couple days upon eating my throat felt more constricted, heavier (more swollen). Not to the point where I couldn't breathe, but like I had pasty peanut butter sticking to my throat. It stays swollen but that feeling eventually goes away. Does this sound like inflammation or a natural symptom or something that I should discuss?
About Hashimoto thyroiditis;
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
I have gone through your concern.
Hashimoto thyroiditis at the initial phase (when the thyroid function is not altered) does not need treatment with levothyroxine but selenium supplements can help in postponing the inflammation process.
There is a higher predisposition for thyroid nodules in Hashimoto thyroiditis that may be manifested with swelling of the gland but the swelling is not diffuse and acute. The ultrasound will confirm/ rule out the presence of the nodules.
If there is no nodule then the feeling of tightness should be due to the inflammation process.
Hope the information will help. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Best wishes,
