Hi, I Believe I Have Both An Intercostal Sprain And
Question: Hi, I believe I have both an intercostal sprain and a trap sprain on my right side. I'm having difficulty getting them to heal. It seems like when one starts to heal, the other gets worse.
I had previously been in PT for a right lower back sprain. As I was starting to get better, these new sprains happened. I've been on compression, ice, and rest, but they dont seem to be working that well. It's been a few months and I'm still having issues.
I still have difficulty sitting up straight for any extended period or having any power overhead. After sitting for a bit, I start to get more labored breathing and my chest muscles get sore. I've also notice that my bladder muscles just seem weak or something. I find myself constantly having to go to the bathroom but I only go a little bit each time. It's like my bladder never gets full.
So, first, I'm not sure what else to do to get these sprains to heal fully. Second, I'd like to know if my bladder problem is possibly just weak muscles or if you think there is another issue.

Brief Answer:
Vitamin D supplements can help
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.
I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. I thing that you need to reapproach your PT and work out a doable proper exercise regimen. Ultrasonotherapy should help and your PT would be able to do that. The exercises need to start only after that (possibly, your PT would be best able to comment on the scenario).
I would insist you to take vitamin D supplements. 60,000 units once weekly for 6 weeks should help.
About your constantly needing to go to the bathroom, you need to be examined clinically before it can be commented upon.
Regards

Thanks for your answer. I currently take 5000 ius of vitamin d per day. I have for years. I can definitely increase it to 6000, however, can you tell me the significance of that number?
Ultrasonotherapy was a regular part of my pt. I can reapparoch it again. Do you think tight pelvic floor muscles along with the other muscle tension could be leading to my urgency issue?

Brief Answer:
Pelvic floor exercises definitely needed
Detailed Answer:
I am not talking about 6,000 but 60,000 units and that is a weekly dose and not a daily one.
Pelvic floor exercises would certainly help with the urgency issue.

Sorry that was my mistype of 60000. Can you please tell me why you're recommending vitamin d and what the significance of this type of dosage is?
Brief Answer:
Internationally recommended regimen for supplementation
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. The musculoskeletal problems that you are complaining of, could be explained by vitamin D deficiency. The dosage that I have suggested is an internationally recommended regimen (but not the only one) and not something I have suggested on my own. There is plenty of medical literature on the rationale and I think that going into technical jargon is pointless.
