Question:      Hi I believe by fiancé is an alcoholic. He has been expecting yellow stool for about 4-5 months and dark yellow urine. What does this mean and is it the alcohol that is causing these issues?

Brief Answer:
Alcohol may be a culprit.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query,

Urine naturally has some yellow pigments called urobilin which is a breakdown product of bile. However the most comon cause of dark yellow color is dehydration.Alcohol is a dehydrating agent and may cause concentrated urine giving it dark yellow tinge.

The color of the stool in clinical diagnosis as such has no clinical significance. All shades from dark brown to yellow are good.

However, I would suggest you go for an ultrasound of liver to see any pathology related to hepatobiliary tract due to alcohol intake. A bilirubin test should also be done.

In short, unless he is symptomatic no need to worry.

Thank you.
