Question: Hi. I broke my fibula Oct 6, 2018 near the ankle. It was more like a hairline fracture and I was put in an airiest. Went to work and 2 weeks later I have pain and swelling and the Xray shows that the bone is slightly out of alignment and the angled fracture with a gap is very obvious. Can the surgeon put it back in alignment without cutting me open? Can I go to work in an airiest despite the pain? I am a healthcare professional, working at a clinic.

Brief Answer:
Can heal conservatively also.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I have seen the attached X-ray. The bone is slightly out of alignment. It can heal well in the aircast but you need to take rest and avoid bearing weight on the foot. You need at least three more weeks rest and let it heal gradually in case you want to avoid the surgery. The mild displacement will be taken care of during the bone remodelling after proper healing.
I hope this answers your query.

Dear Dr. Tayal,
Thank you for your reply. Can a surgeon put it back in alignment by adjusting it without a surgery?
Can I go to work and see patients in aircast using the crutches?
I am a healthcare provider.

Brief Answer:
Alignment by adjustment is not likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
After three weeks of injury it is difficult to just push the bone fragments to its place as the callus starts forming for healing. It is not likely to push it back in alignment by adjusting without a surgery. In case you want to continue with your work then surgery is a safe option for you. Bearing weight on the leg even in aircast can displace it further.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Dear Dr. Tayal,
Thank you for your reply.
I am a pro-skier and a competitive dancer.
Is it possible for me to continue skiing and dancing professionally after bone healing and physio?
How long would it take to get back to 100% normal?
Is it possible to break the bone from the same spot skiing and dancing professionally?
Would the bone heal permanently or the bone be weak forever on the sight of the fracture?
Please kindly advise,
Respectfully,
Mo

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
After proper bone healing and physiotherapy you can continue with skiing and dancing.
You can take 8-12 weeks to get back to normal. The bone can break again form the same spot or nearby area in case too much stress is there due to dancing.
The bone will heal permanently but stress can cause a fracture.
Regards.
