Question: Hi. I had a pedicure just under 2 weeks ago at the salon in the the hotel spa where I was staying in Spain. They cut the area around my big toenail and it was bleeding and sore. It has healed to an extent but cuticle area still sore I just want to check risk of hiv/other infections from this. I was advised by salon manager all instruments are fully sterilised and they did actually advise before my treatment commenced that the instruments were sterilised. What is the risk in your view of getting hiv or another infection this way? I am taking their word that the pedicure instruments were fully sterilised. I have also referred this to a dermatologist in terms of healing of cuticle,
Brief Answer:
There is absolutly no risk for HIV.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome in "Ask a Doctor".
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Based on your history I think you shouldn't worry because there is absolutly no risk for HIV.
You should know that HIV cannot live outside the body just few minutes even if the instruments were not fully sterilised.
The only risk in this situation is to get Hepatitis B,C or bacterial infection if the sterilisation process is not fully done.
Hope I have answered your query.
Feel free to ask me further.

Thank you. Would you recommend a test then for Hepatitis B and C? How quickly would that show? Thanks
Brief Answer:
I suggest to do the test for B and C after 3 months.
