Brief Answer:
Fall in platelets can be due to infectious or immune causes

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on 'Ask A Doctor' service.

Fall in platelet can occur due to infectious causes like malaria or viral infections.
These conditions will be accompanied by fever and malaise.

Besides infectious causes, the immune cause is also common called Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
ITP is usually sudden in onset with or without fever.
ITP is suspected once all other infectious causes of low platelets are ruled out.

I'd suggest you consult your hematologist to look for the possible cause of low platelets.
ITP is self-limiting condition and platelets return to normal after treatment with steroids.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and take care

Brief Answer:
Platelet counts start improving as a supportive treatment for dengue starts

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome again,

Dengue infection is associated with a rapid fall in platelets.

Treatment for dengue is primarily supportive.
The platelet count is closely monitored during dengue infection.
As recovery from dengue starts, the platelets also start recovering.

There is no requirement for separate medication for platelets.
In case the platelet count falls below 20,000 /cmm; platelet transfusion is required.

Thanks and take care
