Hi, I Have Nexplanon Implant For Contraception , However Am
I took emergency contraception (EC) within 12 hours of having sex - ( 2 pills of 0.75 milligrams of Levonorgestrel, taken 2 hours apart). Now I am concerned that taking the EC could affect the Nexplanon?
Could the sudden decrease in Levonorgestrel after the EC wore off cause me to ovulate?
Sorry about all the questions. I am very anxious.
Thanks in advance.
Don't worry about pregnancy. No chance of ovulation.
Detailed Answer:
Hi there.
I welcome you to Ask A Doctor service.
I have understood your concern and I will suggest you the best possible treatment options.
First of all do not panic.
Contraceptive implant starts working and start getting effective within 48 hours after insertion.
It has been shown in various studies that they are effective in preventing the pregnancy in most of the patients.
So please do not worry about getting pregnant.
Secondly, taking emergency contraceptive pills is not necessary, as you have implant as well as your partner is using barrier like Condom.
Also, emergency contraceptive pills will not affect working of implanted device.
There is no way that ovulation will take place as daily slow release of progesterone hormone from implant has already exerted it's effect on preventing ovulation.
And this effect will last for the period till you have implant in your body, and upto it's defines period of action.
I will suggest you to opt for a healthy lifestyle.
Start having a healthy diet and regular exercise regime.
Include plenty of fruits and vegetables and salads in daily diet.
Have plenty of water in the day.
Please keep watching for dates of vaginal bleeding that can sometimes occur, after progesterone implant.
If you suspect pregnancy, I will suggest you to get morning's first sample of urine tested for pregnancy.
In case of any doubt, blood beta HCG test and USG report done.
Please feel free to communicate with me again.
I hope this answer helps you.
Thanks.
