Question: Hi, I have a UTI, I’m female age 68. Started on Macrobid, took for 3 days with side affects of flu like symptoms. Doctor changed me to Ampicillin which I have used for 24 hours. My skin is itching like crazy, but no hives have appeared. I am leaving on vacation on Tuesday and am worried about having a severe reaction while flying. Would taking a probiotic help? What to do?

Brief Answer:
I would switch antibiotics again

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. Since you are having this reaction already to the Ampicillin, I would suggest switching to another antibiotic, as the itching may continue to get worse and it may make the flight that much more uncomfortable. If you can get a hold of your doctor and switch to Bactrim, cefidinir, or another antibiotic, hopefully you will not have any side effects with it and will be able to complete the course.

Another option might be to just stop the antibiotics if your symptoms have resolved, and see if they come back. It may be that between the two antibiotics, the infection has been sufficiently treated. If you don't have any symptoms come back, you could consider the infection treated, and not have to worry about it.

Also, probiotics would only help with antibiotic associated diarrhea, and even then the benefit is questionable.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
