Superficial thrombophlebitis may take weeks to go away
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,
I carefully read your query and understand your concern.
Normal D-Dimer rules out DVT and other serious clotting conditions.
As for the lump you have in your leg, I did not see it mentioned but an ultrasound examination would be helpful to make sure of what it is. It can be superficial thrombophlebitis, which normally should go away on its own in a few weeks. You seem to be taking the right treatment for thrombophlebitis (warm compresses, ibuprofen, elevating the leg when possible).
Compression stockings may be used as well, and in some cases, if the patient is considered at risk for DVT blood thinners (medications) may be given. In cases when the patient has varicose veins as well, surgery to remove these veins may be needed.
To conclude:
- D- dimer does rule out DVT so it does not seem you are having serious clotting condition
- if your symptoms are lasting less than a month or two, you may not need to worry as normally it takes a few weeks for superficial thrombophlebitis to clear up
- you may also wear compression stockings to help with superficial thrombophlebitis and try to be active as much as possible (do not sit for long times or just stand for long times, you need to move to help the blood circulate. If you need to sit or lay down, you can elevate your leg by supporting it on a stool or pillow)
- if the lump and warm feeling are lasting for more than 2 months or you feel you are getting worse, maybe it is needed to have an ultrasound examination to surely determine the nature of the lump
- if you have varicose veins that favor the development of superficial thrombophlebitis then maybe the doctor will recommend treating those varicose veins.
I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
