Hi, I Have An Ulcer On The Left Upper Side
I have an ulcer on the left upper side of the mouth.
The issue is that it seems to have no known cause apart from friction with the teeth during sleep. I have attached photo of the area affected.
Based on the photo, does the cause appear to be friction with teeth? I also have gastric reflux and wonder if that could explain the look of the affected area.
Regards.

Hii.
Welcome to the Ask A Doctor service.
There is an ulcer on the inner side of the buccal mucosa. Can you explain more details about the ulcer, whether it is recurrent? How long is the ulcer? It seems that it can get affected by friction of the teeth. The ulcer due to acid reflux is unlikely. But it can be due to vitamin deficiency also. So start a vitamin supplement. Take betadine gargle. Start candiderm mouth paint. Visit an ENT surgeon and get consulted to see if there is no induration below the ulcer. If there is any induration, you need to get a biopsy, else apply the above medication and wait for few week to get it resolved.
Please review if you have any queries.
The ulcer does not seem recurrent but the surrounding tissue has been white in colour for some time (at least a few years). The ulcer started feeling painful 5 days ago. I am not sure if there was an ulcer before that.
Can I also try mouthwash with chlorhexidine? Does your suggestion of using Candid mouth paint suggest that there could be fungal infection?
I have noticed that the ulcer appears to heal and then just a few hours later is larger in size than before. I have attached photos taken 6 hours ago when it seemed to heal and also taken just now.
Regards.

Hii. Please start chlorhexidine and candid mouth paint. Take a vitamin supplement. Visit a dental surgeon to smoothen your sharp teeth and ent surgeon to have a look on the ulcer. If it is of long duration and is recurrent, then it need to get removed and sent for biopsy. It can be fungal, any connective tissue disorder or any lesion. So its better to get removed if it's not resolving with above medications.
