Hi I Have Been Diagnosed With Viral Respiratory Tract Infection
I have been diagnosed with viral respiratory tract infection yesterday by doctor. Symptoms include dry cough with phlegm, headache, muscle ache and slight runny nose. Doctor has put me on Amucoe 200 mg twice a day, Montewok LC once a day and Ascoril LS 100 ml syrup thrice a day. While I don't have much of cough and cold as it appears to be moderate, my fever is shooting up every 12 hrs. Is it a cause of worry?
Also I have 9 month old daughter whom I am breastfeeding. Is it safe to take Ascoril syrup? I read somewhere that feeding mom's should not consume it? I am really worried about my situation. Please help.
Yes, avoid Ascoril syrup.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Ask a doctor forum.
I can understand your concern.
Yes, you are right.
Avoid Ascoril syrup as it contains bromhexine and guafenesin.
Better to take cough suppressant syrup containing Chlorpheniramine maleate (CPM).
It is safe for infant and ideal for dry irritating cough.
In viral infection, fever is common for first five to six days.
So no need to worry much. Take simple paracetamol tablet twice daily.
Also use mask or cloth while coughing or sneezing.
Don't stop breastfeeding, continue it. Your immunity against this current viral infection will be transferred to your baby via breast milk. So continue breast feeding.
Just avoid kissing and very close intimate contact with your baby for 1 week. This is to prevent airborne infection.
Drink plenty of fluids orally and keep yourself hydrated.
Do warm water gargles and steam inhalation 4-5 times a day.
Don't worry, you will be alright with all these.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
What are the chances of my daughter getting it? She had two fly shots in her 6th and 7th month respectively. She is now 8 months old.
Also my fever was 102 in the morning and after taking Crocin also it has not gone below 100.4. IS that ok?
I am active and I don't have any muscle and headaches unlike yesterday.
Better to take plain paracetamol.

Thanks for your follow up question on Ask a doctor forum.
I can understand your concern.
Better to take plain paracetamol tablet three times a day.
Your fever will mostly subside with this in 2-3 days.
Honestly speaking, your baby will be at risk of spread of viral infection. It is inevitable.
But she might not developed disease because of vaccination.
