Hi, I Have Been Experiencing Severe Pain In My Left
![default](/r/images/default.png)
The entire thumb hurts but it is particularly painful to touch the nail. Holding anything cold exacerbates it. No injury to my hand or arm and I am not into texting. I am right handed. My HbA1C and blood sugars are WNL. No diabetes in my family. My BMI is 22 and I am a healthy 60 year old female.
I made an appointment with a hand orthopedic doctor but his earliest appointment is at the end of November.
What do you think this is and what type of Dr should I go to? It is so painful that I may go to a walk-in clinic but have a feeling they will just tell me to go to a hand specialist. I appreciate your feedback!
Kind regards, XXXXXXX
possible issue with nail bed giving thumb pain.consult a general surgeon.
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome to Ask A Doctor service.
I have read your query and here is my advise.
* As the pain is particularly aggravated when touching nail, it sounds to be possible
infection below nail with radiating pain involving whole thumb.
* My recommendations at present
- Ice application 3 times a day for 5 minutes each.
- Avoid grasping objects with thumb support.
- Consider prior appointment with a consultant surgeon if possible sooner ( as hand
orthopedic appointment is November end to get prescription of necessary antibiotics
and anti inflammatory medicines to cure early.
Wish you fine recovery.
Feel free to discuss further anytime.
Regards.
