Hi, I Have Been On Fluoxetine 20mg Daily For OCD

Question: Hi, I have been on Fluoxetine 20mg daily for OCD for the past 2 months. Today my psychiatrist added Bupropion 150mg to help with the sexual side effect of Fluoxetine. He asked me about my drinking habit (I have about 2 glasses of wine per sittting, about twice week), he did not tell me to stop, but when I read the pharmacy instruction for Bupropion it says to avoid alcohol. I never had any issue with drinking on Fluoxetine, but should I stop drinking at all once I start Bupropion? For the record, I don't have any history of seizure, which I know can be a problem with Bupropion.

I read your query and understand your concerns about interaction of alcohol with different medications.

Ideally speaking there should be no mixing of psychotropics and alcohol and alcohol need to be stopped irrespective of amount and frequency.

Practically speaking there are there medications in your daily life which can lower the seizure threshold. These are obviously bupropion, alcohol and fluoxetine (this also lowers seizure threshold) and combination of three things can bring out seizures. Since fluoxetine and bupropion are necessary I feel alcohol should be stopped.

In addition the metabolism of alcohol is also affected with current medications and this makes it ideal candidate to go out from your life.
