Question: Hi, I have been on the pill this time around for 3 years now (Levlon) and this month Im still taking the active pill and have started to bleed. It seems to come in the mornings and then goes away by the afternoon and this is day four of this happening. I have minor period symptoms with it. I am wondering why this has happened this month (This is the start of month three of continuous pills as I miss my period because of endo and heavy periods) The only thing different is that I started a very low carb diet last week. Could this be the cause? I have continued to take my pill but wondering if I need to have a break to make this stop

Brief Answer:
Unscheduled bleeding also known as breakthrough bleeding (spotting) may occur.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question Kaz. Hope I can be of help for you today.

Through reading your query I would like to help you with this question. Levlen Pill is combination hormone medication progestin and estrogen. It makes vaginal fluid thicker and changes the lining of the uterus (womb). This medicine may make your periods more regular, decrease blood loss and painful periods, prevent pregnancy and decrease your risk of ovarian cysts. What is the purpose of you using this medicine? The side effect of this medicine can cause you weight change, amenorrhea (missed period), unscheduled bleeding also known as breakthrough bleeding (spotting) may occur. If there is prolonged heavy bleeding you should go to see a doctor for reevaluation and change the medicine. Eating low carbohydrates is not related to abnormal vaginal bleeding.

I hope that can help you, and please let me know if you have any clarification or question about that, and I would be welcome to discuss it with you further. I Hope you have good health.

Best regards,
