Hi, I Have Had A Flu Vaccine About A Month
Question: Hi,
I have had a flu vaccine about a month ago from a chemist. I am not sure the shot was fully administered into the muscle area as I felt a cold liquid sensation running through my veins afterwards. Also there seemed to be a bit of swelling and pain after injection, more than usual. Then the area has had what seems like a painful acne at point of injection sometimes.
Should all flu vaccine shots be administered into the arm or other muscle area?
Can I now have another flu shot administered or is it considered unsafe or ineffective to have another equivalent flu shot so soon after the shot has been given?
Thankyou.

Brief Answer:
Flushot can be repeated if dispensed improperly, not for enhanced immunity

Hi...
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor"service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX
I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.
Yes....flu shot is administered intramuscularly as it optimizes immunogenicity and reduces adverse effects.
Deltoid muscle in arm is the preferred site but can be given in thigh, specially in children.
Guidelines generally do not recommend more than one dose of influenza vaccine in a season, except for certain children aged 6 months through 8 years for whom two doses are recommended.
There is no clinical evidence that repeat vaccination is associated with increased immunity.
Taking another flu shot is neither unsafe nor will it make the vaccination ineffective.
If you feel that vaccine has not been properly dispensed, you can repeat the dose with out any side effects.
Hope that I have answered your query.
Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.

Thanks Dr. XXXXXXX
I understand your explanation.
I order to decide what to do, could I please know what level of effectiveness an improperly administered flu vaccine could achieve? Is it possible that it confers no immunity to the flu or is the issue that it confers some immunity such as 50% of the full level of immunity expected? I would not repeat a dose unless it is possible that the level of immunity is significantly below the intended level.
Thankyou,
Regards.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back......
It is very difficult to tell, how much the vaccine would be effective,if improperly administered (or sometimes,if proper cold chain is not maintained).
It would be difficult to quantify.
If it is not able to mount a protective immune response after a dose,it is called a primary vaccine failure.
Here there is improper and inadequate stimulation of immune system to produce adequate antibodies.
If you are unsure about it,please go for repeat vaccination as it is better to "err" on the safer side.
Happy living.
