Hi, I Have Previously Had Scan Which Came Back Citing

default

Question: Hi, I have previously had scan which came back citing Mod/Severe Foraminal stenosis of cervical spine and mod foraminal stenosis of lumbar spine and dent in spine also. In Feb 2020 my neck was subjected to a number of sudden severe sharp pulls and the elbow of the person inflicting this kept banging against the base of my skull while my neck was extended. I felt something pop out of place and had a terrible sensation spread through my skull. IMMEDIATELY after this happened I did not recognise anyone around me for the next hour and a half at least and I was surrounded by friends and family (I was at my brothers funeral and a mourner there pulled at my neck repeatedly while sympathising). Ten minutes after this incident I had a seizure without loss of consciousness. That night when I lay down in bed it felt as if my neck was ready to snap about half way down. After that for weeks I had tremendous pressure in my head. During these episodes I could not hear properly. A few weeks after there was a horrible squelching sound and sensation at the back of my skull where the neck and skull meet. My body shook for half an hour. This happened numerous times. I still cannot move my neck properly and now have a dripping sound in my right ear which is not in time with my pulse. If I put my finger in my ear when this dripping sound is going on the sound gets louder. No xrays or imaging of any kind has been organised. No doctor has examined my neck despite me going to the doctor numerous times. At this stage I have a protrusion running down the right side of my neck. I don't know if it's a muscle or a vein. The right side of my neck is level with my jaw (no dip underneath) whereby the left side of my neck is normal. When I move my head there is a crunching sound from the very top of my neck and pain right down the right side and into my shoulder. When I touch the base of my neck on the right hand side it is very painful. Please help.

When reviewing the above I noticed an error. The dripping sound is mostly in my left ear and this evening it was in my right ear also (not at the same time). The dripping sound occurs daily. Also when I bend fluid runs from my right eye and right nostril. When the water runs from my eye it does not take the route that tears would. It wells up at the lower lid and pours straight down my cheek. This also happens when I am outside even in the smallest of breezes. It is NOT a draught in my eye and the wind doesn't even have to blow directly into my eye to cause this. The fluid is salty.

Hi there

Thanks for the query

I have read your query and understood your Probed you have pain at the back of the neck that radiates to the arms and hands?

You seem to be suffering from symptoms of nerve compression in the neck. You also have tinnitus in the ears.

It is advisable to ask your GP to arrange an MRI cervical spine and also get you an ENT consult to rule out the cause of tinnitus. It could be low blood pressure, high blood pressure, nerve compression, infection.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Aashish Raghu

I'm afraid that you didn't understand my question. I have pain in my neck that causes intense pressure sensations in my skull. The majority of the pain is in my skull. I have pain where the skull sits on top of the neck. There is a crunching sound when I move my head. The noise in my ear is a DRIPPING sound. I used to have a high pitched sound in my ears prior to the incident described at my brothers funeral. The DRIPPING sound is sometimes rapid and sometimes slow.Would the fluid streaming from my right eye and right nostril when I bend over be caused by a trapped nerve or tinnutis? My head is unsupported by my neck and my spine has been pulled out of alignment by the weight of my head flopping to the right hand side.

The symptoms you are experiencing is likely due to trapped nerve in the spine that goes to the back of your head. The ear symptoms are likely tinnitus and may not be related to nerve compression in the spine. You will need an MRI cervical spine and am ENT consult

Is tinnitus a dripping sound in the ear? I thought it was a high pitched noise or a "whooshing" sound in the ears. Or even perhaps a clicking sound but I have never heard of anyone with tinnitus having a very rapid dripping sound mostly in the left ear and in the right ear if I lie on my right hand side in bed. Would a trapped nerve feel like my neck was ready to snap in half? Or would it be responsible for my neck being unable to support my head and my head flopping over to the right hand side and pulling my entire spine out of alignment? Bear in mind please the results of the mri from last year (prior to the attack on my neck) and the pre-existing foraminal stenosis in the cervical and lumbar spine and a dent in the thoracic spine.

Hi there

Sorry for the delay.

Yes you can can whooshing sound, clicking or dripping sound in tinnitus. It can give a feeling of imbalance of the head as mentioned, seen in Vertigo.

Nerve compression can feel very painful and van very commonly occur in foraminal stenosis.

It would be appropriate to get an ENT consult to rule out tinnitus and vertigo.

This could indicate worsening of deformity and pressure on the nerves. An urgent MRI is indicated.
