Hi, I Have Schizo Affective Disorder, Was Diagnosed In My

Question: Hi, I have schizo affective disorder, was diagnosed in my early 20's, am now 37, about 4 months ago after gradually reduction under consultation with NHS Psychiatrist i came off my medication. I was on Venlafaxine and risperdol (changed to amisulpride for the final last two years). I would rather to myself as a "high functioning" schizo affective. As an example my mental nurse who saw me weekly after last episode had about 50 patients and according to her i was the only one that had a job. On that note I work full time, drive, etc have a normal life. I'm presently content in my life with both myself and my circumstance. So whats the problem, after about a month of coming off the medication i started getting irratated and angry (i would call it rage) i didn't shout at any one or have argments or do anything other than keep it to myself (because thats not really my personality, maybe snap at parents a bit), but it was a marked difference and i don't think i've ever experienced that amount of rage for a prolong period before (4 months), it was mixed with anxiety, now the rage has died down mostly, but the anxiety is their. Its very physical in my body, not really mental (ie thoughts etc..). I get heart palpations, my chest feels tight, tense. Its hard to go to sleep at night. I've started trying to exercise every day and this elevates it for around 10-15min after, but then comes back. Meditation also elevates the best, but again after 10-15 mins after session its back. Now essentially I just want to see if this is true, that after being on the medication for so long, it will take a while (like a year say or more) for the body to adjust to the after affects of having been on medication. I am not talking about withdrawal affects from the medication, as i understand that as your coming of my medication ( and i did have some) for a couple of weeks whilst reducing and whilst the drugs half life is still in afffect. I can't seem to find much information about this, and any that does seem to refer to the withdrawal of stopping (incorrectly) or immediatly afterwards. I am seeing my consultant in a couple of months, but I just wanted a quick answer now. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Relapse of symptoms could be due to abrupt discontinuation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to ask a doctor service,

I have gone through your query in detail and can certainly understand your concern towards your symptoms.

The relapse of symptoms like anger and irritability could be due to abrupt discontinuation of Medicine.

So, you can go back to your previous dose and continue for 1-2 months till you get proper guidance from your consultant.

Hope this information would help you.
Thank you.

Either you would have tapered it in due course of about 3-4 weeks, you would not have this kind of experience.
