Question: Hi

I have used Alprazolam for 3 days. I feel good after using it for anxiety but the next day is usually heavy , not usually happy. I would think it’s a side effect. Can I stop taking it after 3days.

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

Xanax belongs to benzodiazepine group of medications and highly effective in treatment of acute anxiety. However certain side effects are observed in majority of individuals and feeling drowsy lethargic on the next day is very common. The particular side effect is dose dependent and it is possible to reverse this particular side effect by changing the dose to lower side. In case that does not help talking to your doctor to change the medication is another possible alternative.

In case meeting your doctor is not possible it is advisable to hold xanax for some time as three days of use does not cause any form of problem such as withdrawal symptoms.

I hope this helps you.
Feel free to write back to me if you have more questions.
Thanks and regards.

Thanks for your response Dr XXXXXXX I appreciate.

I have a few more questions, I also used Lexapro for 3 days before I stopped using it. I had insomnia was why I stopped using it. Could that also be the reason I’m not feeling any form of excitement. My initial complaint was anxiety which would make me scared for a few times in a day but usually goes away and I feel some excitement at least. Could any of these be the reason there’s no excitement and can I get those times back. I’m afraid to go on these drugs for too long because of the scary things I have read about the withdrawal.

Brief Answer:
Lexapro is unlikely cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for follow up.

I do not think lexapro is cause of not feeling excitement as it does not stay in the system that long. The half life of lexapro is just 24-30 hours and it must be clear by now.

I understand that there are side effects but most of them are of limited nature on long term use of anti anxiety antidepressant medications.

In case you encountered with lexapro it is advisable to use it during morning hours and lower dose (provided higher dose was used).

I hope this helps you further.
Thanks and regards.

Thanks Dr

I have a few more questions. I was prescribed Lexapro and Setraline by 2 doctors. I used the 10mg Lexapro for 2 days as I explained earlier before I stopped cos I couldn’t sleep. Now my question is which do you advise I use between Lexapro and Setraline. I read about the withdrawal symptoms of anti depressants and that even causes more anxiety. I really want to be fine and get motivated again without any form of anxiety. Please advise me on what to do. I have both drugs as prescribed but scared to use any of them

Brief Answer:
Both medications have equal value

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

I do not think any of the two medications is superior to another. Both medications have equal value in treatment of anxiety and only the side effects differ. In case sleep is issue with you I feel paroxetine can be better choice over the above medications.

Similarly the lack of motivation is prominent problem with you I feel sertraline will make a better choice. In the same coin presence of other disorders/medications will make lexapro a better choice as it have fewer interactions.

Regarding the withdrawal symptoms I like to make it clear that they are very uncommon when the medication is gradually tapered down in compare to rapid discontinuation.

Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
