Hi I Just Have A Question About TMJ . Years

I just have a question about TMJ. Years ago I developed a clicking jaw and unfortunately I didn’t let it heal, instead I would keep clicking it, making it worse. Eventually it healed, however it never completely went back to normal. For the last year and a half I have developed acid reflux/hypersensitive oesophagus, which I have sought a plethora of treatments for. This condition is currently more manageable, however if I don’t chew my food extremely thoroughly, the reflux/hypersensitivity is triggered. As a result of chewing my food to the degree in which I don’t trigger symptoms, my jaw has become very fatigued and within the last few days, the left side has become quite painful when I chew. I am also feeling this pain in my left ear region as well. I was just wondering what the best course of action would be to take with this? I would prefer to avoid any pain relieving medications to to my oesophageal issue. Would a dentist or GP be the best person to see and are there specialists that deal with this problem? Thanks
Joel
Physical therapy for good head posture and face muscles
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Thank you for using "Ask a doctor"
I read your query and I understand your concern.
If you want to avoid medication, I would recommend to start seeing a physical therapist who would recommend exercises for the jaw and advice over good head posture.
In some places this is covered by the ENT specialist.
Also except the analgesic medicines who would damage your stomach and make worse the esophageal symptoms, can be used muscle relaxants who would relax the tensed face muscles. These can be prescribed by an ENT and do not cause stomach problems.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Klarida Papaqako
General and family physician.
