Question: Hi, I just switched from 10 mg of celexa to 20 mg. I am only on the switch for about three days but i have been absolutely exhausted since I changed the dose. Is this normal? I don't want to give up on it but wondering how long this may last as it is very difficult to do things. Also, do most people take this medication in the morning or evening? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Can last for a week

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

The unpleasant side effects of celexa including lethargy can last for a week after the medication is started/dose increased. So it is important to wait for that time to settle down the particular side effects. In case the problem is immense and makes you non functional I feel decreasing the dose to 15 mg a day can be of help for a week and after this the dose of 20 mg can be resumed resumed.

In your case it will be helpful to take this medication during night as almost one third individuals find this medication activating and one third find it sedating. The remaining one third report neither sedation nor activation. I mean to say that individual characteristic determine the schedule of celexa.

I hope this helps you.
Feel free to write back to me if you have more questions.
Thanks and regards.

Hi, I have recently started taking an SSRI, celexa, and i most recently have gone from the dose of 10 mg to 20 mg. Since this increase i have noticed improved mood which is positive but I have also noticed that I have had a lot of GI issues, such as indigestion, gas, and severe bloating. Is this normal and if so how long will it go on? Also, is there anything I can take in the meantime to deal with this issue as it is quite uncomfortable. Thanks!

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for follow up.

As communicated earlier it takes around one week to two weeks to settle down G. I related side effects due to use of SSRI including Celexa. So it will be better to wait for that time to settle down these side effects. I like to inform you that above symptoms are often time limited and there is little to worry about them.

The PPIs such as omeprazole 20 mg can be taken to offset these symptoms to a large extent. Other than that diet modification in form of less spicy and avoidance of tea, caffeine, alcohol can also help you.

I hope this answers you further.
Thanks again.
