Hi. I Recently Got A Basic Neurological Exam And The
Question: Hi. I recently got a basic neurological exam and the doctor said that the findings were good, but he wanted me to come back in 3 months in case he missed something. My question is: would it be possible that even with a perfect neurological exam that he could have missed something serious and I could have something like MS or ALS? I’ve recently noticed a slight loss of motion in one of my fingers on one hand, and one arm just feels slightly weaker than the other. I’ve had a recurring theme since about christmas time and was wondering if it was anything to worry about. I am still able to run, and recently ran 18 miles, and ran a race, though my races are not as fast as they once were which is another concerning topic. Do you think I am fine or have something wrong?
Brief Answer:
I think you are fine.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for using "Ask a Doctor " service.
I have read your query and here is my advice.
Since the neurological examination resulted okay, you should not be worried about anything serious.
The neurological examination is the cornerstone of the neurological disorders diagnosis.
ALS is very unlikely in your case because of your age besides absence of the symptoms.
MS seems very unlikely too, because of the symptoms characteristics and your overall condition.
So, as a result, you should not be worried about any serious neurological condition.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
I think you are fine.

So even in the very beginning I shouldn’t worry as long as the neurological exam is okay?
Brief Answer:
It is possible.
Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.
As I mentioned before, ALS is unlikely in your case, for two main reasons:
1- normal neurological examination
2- your age.
A normal neurological examination is a reassuring factor for other neurological disorders too, even in the beginning.
Just follow up is sufficient in your case.
Hope I helped you.
Feel free to discuss with me if you have further questions.
It is possible.

Just to be clear, when you say it is possible, what are you referring to? That my eye straining could be related to a neurological disorder?
Brief Answer:
Eye-straining may be a problem of the eye itself.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
It is possible for the neurological examination since in the beginning to exclude major neurological conditions.
If your eye-straining was caused by a neurological condition, at least the neurological examination should have raised some suspects about it.
So, in my opinion, is more likely that this is a problem with eye and vision (refractory problems for example.
Hope this helps.
Take care.

I suspect that i would have some difficulty running if there was a big problem, and I’m able to run everyday. and that since I’ve been complaining about it since December, that I’d notice some big changes by now. Is this correct?
Brief Answer:
Follow up.
Detailed Answer:
Yes, if there was something serious, after 4 months there should have been some clear signs by now.
As we discussed previously, follow up with your Neurologist.
Greetings.
