Question: Hi,
I suffered a Grade III Ankle sprain on July 10 2019 and I was in a walking boot for 6 weeks.
Today, my doctor made a new observation on my MRI and stated that there’s a loose cartilage 1cm wide which needs to be removed through an ankle arthroscopy. My question is, is the surgery necessary?

Brief Answer:
Can resolve on its own.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A loose cartilage of 1 cm width can get absorbed on its own also. A surgery is not absolutely necessary in this case. This can resolve on its own in next 3-4 months. In case it is painful or there is a difficulty in walking then the surgical removal may need to be considered. You can continue with your normal daily activities in the meanwhile.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.
