Hi! I Took A Birth Control Pill About 6 Hrs

Question: Hi! I took a birth control pill about 6 hrs late last Thursday {Day 8 of cylcle, pill 4 of pack} then I threw up an hour later. I didn’t think anything of it until Friday morning that it might not have absorbed in my system. When I talked to my OBGYN he made me take an extra one just in case. I haven’t thrown up since but my phone alarm has been off so I haven’t been taking my pill on time. I’m taking it everyday but it’s getting later at night. I usually take my pill at 11 but since I threw up it’s been about 3pm then 6 pm and tonight 7. Does it matter as long as I take it that day? I’m on the combination pill Apri. Also. I had sex the Tues before I threw up {Day 6}. Would I be covered since I threw up 2 days later? Also, we had sex Sat {Day 10} am I covered because I took that extra pill? Am I covered because I’ve been a little off track? Should I be worried I’m pregnant? I want to get back on schedule. Is it okay if I take the pill tomorrow at 11 again or I’m I screwing up my hormones?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Ask a Doctor. I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.
With combined contraceptive pill like Apri, you need to take one tablet daily to remain protected. You will not be protected if thare is a gap of more than 24 hours between two pills.
Since you have been taking tablet daily you should be protected. However the best protection is when you are taking the tablet around the same time daily. Therefore take the remaining tablets at the same time daily ( 11 pm).
If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.

Ramadevi Wani
