Hi, I Took A Short Nap Yesterday And When I

Question: Hi, I took a short nap yesterday and when I woke up the left side of my face was swollen from right under my ear to my cheekbone. The swelling was contained to the side of my face not the front. It was hard to the touch but not necessary painful. I looked closely for a “bite” thinking something bit me but could find nothing-no redness, no itching. I took two Benadryl and the swelling decreased SOME but not much. When I looked in the mirro This morning, the swelling was still visible AND the area right under my chin was swollen and hanging like an older person’s XXXXXXX . The swelling was right under my chin. I can feel a mass of swollen tissue there.
I went over every thing I ate or put on my skin in the past 24 hours and all of that. Was eaten or used previously with no problem. I had worked in the garden yesterday morning but wasn’t aware of anything biting or stinging me. I am a 69 year old female and generally in good health. My skin under my chin doesn’t hang Normally. I have sinus problems and yesterday was a very bad sinus day before I noticed the swelling. Somewhere in the dark crevices of my mind, I think something similar has happed before but if so it’s been quite awhile. What do you think is going on with these symptoms?
Ps I have a dog , my sweetheart , for 7 years. No cats, no swelling under the eye or mouth. I look forward to your thoughts.

Brief Answer:
Few possible causes

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM. First, if this is improving and there is no pain, then there is no need to be worried. In most cases this is localized allergic reaction to insect bite, detergents, or any other allergen. If there is associated pain or fever then this is suggestive of cellulitis, tooth abscess or partoid gland inflammation. Less common causes are trigeminal nerve neuritis or hematoma. In every case, I don't think that specific work up is required. You can put cold packs if swelling is visible or apply antihistamine cream. If it happens repeatedly you should see ENT doctor to check partoid gland and cheek muscles. Wish you good health. Regards
