Question: Hi, I wanted to ask if taking CorexT(Triprolidine Hydrochloride and Codeine Phosphate Cough syrup) is safe along with Famotidine. I'm on Famotidine 20mg(morning), 20mg(before dinner) and 20mg(before bed) treatment for acid reflux.

Greetings, this is Dr. David Girardi. I am triple board-certified with 18 years of experience.
I am reading through your inquiry right now and I do understand the concern you have. The cough suppressants that you are taking namely the COREX, and Codeine Phosphate are in fact safe with Famotidine. In you have pre-existing acid reflux these cough suppressants can in fact make the reflux slightly worse for a time and I do see you are taking the famotidine twice daily which is perfect here. I would continue your current regimen of 20mg in the morning and 20 mg in the evening and using the cough suppressants (both of them) as needed is perfectly safe. Frequently I will prescribe or even temporarily increase the acid suppression medication if needed during these periods using cough suppressants. I do also want to recommend taking these after a mean or at least with something in your stomach this helps a great deal to reduce discomfort

Thank you Dr. that helps. I forgot to mention that I'm also taking Cetirizine 10mg once a day and Fluticasone once a day for treating the post nasal drip. I think they all together are okay but can you please confirm that all meds together are fine for a short period of 7 days or so?

Famotidine 20mg X 3 times
CorexT(Triprolidine Hydrochloride and Codeine Phosphate Cough syrup) - 2 tsp X 3 times
Cetirizine 10mg X once a day
Fluticasone(Flonase) X 2 spray in each nostril once a day

YES those are all fine together

So, thank you for the follow up question. Yes, these are all fine together, the Cetirizine, Flonase, Corex and Famotidine are all compatible and while the Cetirizine and Famotidine are both antihistamine medications, they block different histamine receptors and are completely fine together. No issues here at all!

Thank you Dr., that helps. Just one last question. I also have a single kidney by birth and that's normal with normal kidney function. I'm assuming that all these meds don't have any issue in my case since my kidney function is normal. Can you confirm this as well? Thanks in advance and you have been super helpful.

Good question and so long as your kidney function is normal (with an eGFR > 60) then I have no concern with that. Below that value we should start reducing the dose of the Codeien itself but the others are safe down to rather low values. If your renal function is good, then you are cleared to continue!!!
