Question: Hi. I was prescribed my first antibiotic in years for an infection. It is nitrofurantoin Mano/Mac 100mg. My question is that should I be taking another antibiotic if I had c-difficile 4 years ago. I initially took flagly and then ended up having to take vancomycin to get rid of it. I’m overall a healthy 30 year old female. Just nervous to take my first antibiotic. Obviously plan to take my probiotic with it. Should I be concerned.

Brief Answer:
Nitrofurantoine is less likely to cause c. Difficile.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

Every kind of antibiotic can potentially cause clostridium difficile. Nitrofurantoine is less likely to cause it and is not in the group that are mainly known to cause it such ciprofloxacine, cephalosporines etc.
You can use vitamin c and probiotics such enterogermina while on nitrofurantoine to help intestinal flora .

Hope I have answered the question . Let me know if I can assist you further
