Hi I Worry About My Heart Rate And Want Some

Question: Hi

I worry about my heart rate and want some advice.

I take metoprolol 50 mg a day for preventing SVT episodes (possibly caused by AVNRT). I noticed that my heart rate at rest is around 48-50. Before I started my heart rate was never seen below 60 so I think the medicine is causing this. Is it safe for me to take 50 mg when my pulse is around 48-50?

How long does the metoprolol lower my rate, I took the pulse both this morning and right now (14 hours later). It is around 28 hours ago I took my last dosage of 50 mg, does it still affect my heart? It is a slow release pill I am getting. I have been taking it for 5 months 1 pill a day of 50 mg and have not had any SVT episodes while on it.

I would like a fast reply since I need to decide on taking the medicine or not.

Also I have not noticed any issues like fainting or similar.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome on Ask a doctor service!

I understand your concern and would explain that Metoprolol with slow release acts usually 24 hours from intake in your body.

From the other hand, these heart rate values are not too low.

In my opinion Metoprolol is necessary in your case in order to prevent possible cardiac arrhythmia.

Coming to this point, I would just recommend reducing gradually the dose of Metoprolol in order to avoid bradycardia and also prevent from rebound tachycardia ( which would occur in case of abrupt stopping of Metoprolol).

Hope to will find this answer helpful!
