Question: Hi, I would like to ask you about my smoking cessation. I smoked 10-13 cigarretes per day for 6 years (cca 4 pack-years). I started to smoke at age 25 and stopped at age 31. Now I'm 3 months smoke-free and I feel good about it. But I'm still worried about my health. How is the risk for all types of cancer and COPD during my life-time? Could such amount of cigarettes and years of smoking done serious damages to my body? Have I still chance to live healthy life? I also started living healthier year ago. I excercise and I'm eating mostly plant-based-diet. I'm not drinking alcohol at all. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Continue to have a healthy lifestyle please

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking in Ask the Doctor

I can understand your concern and I congratulate you to have stopped smoking.

First your smoking period is not so long and this is a good thing
Your age of smoking is also young and the risks for developing COPD na dlung cancer are low instead.

COPD is related directly with smoking more than lung cancer.

If you are worried about your lung status as an ex-smoker you can do a Spirometry test and if it is normal than no worries. However, COPD is a disease of over 40 ies.
Regarding lung cancer, unfortunately, there is not yet any blood test or examination to detect earlier lung cancer. You can do a chest X ray now. However, it should be kept in mind that the genetic predisposition is also very important in both diseases
According to the history you provide in my opinion you have very high chances to not develop COPD and lung cancer if you continue to live healthy as you say.

No worries

Hope to have been helpful
