I%E2%80%99m a Bronchiectasis patient with Pseudomonas aeruginosa usually in my mucus .. I had a bronchoscopy last month for repeated hemoptysis the result came as bronchitis as well with Bronchiectasis Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonize.. they want me to take an antibiotic twice a day ( ciprofloxacin 500)
My question: what will happen if I don%E2%80%99t take it? Because they say it seems it will not do anything because it%E2%80%99s there and it will be there inside my lung.. but let%E2%80%99s give it a try.
Since I have been sick all my life now and I don%E2%80%99t see a result for antibiotic lately?
Thanks.

Hello and welcome in Ask the Doctor
First I am sorry for your situation.I can understand your situation .
I strongly recommend you to follow your doctor's recommendations.
Pseudomonas is a common finding in patients with bronchectasis. We usually recommend antipseudomonas antibiotics according to the ATS ERS etc guidelines all over the world
The reason is that if it is not treated well and correct the lung damage will be faster and irreversible unfortunately. We give antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacini or levofloxacin for two weeks approximately orally and colistin which is an antibiotic taken with nebuliser to help irradicate the pseudomonas too locally in the airways.
So for the above important reasons you should take seriously the treatment and do it correctly. If not you should be aware of the consequences which are serious .
Please follow the recommendations and I am sure you will feel better after the treatment.
Hope to have been helpful

Thank you for your answer, that’s helped. I have below questions if you don’t mind.
What about chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa? Is it the same thing as well?
It will never go away?
And what is the end point for this bug?
Is it okay that I’m not feeling well for more than one year? Though I have this bug since ever?
Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hi again
Firstly chronic pseudomonas aeruginosa means that you have it for a long period and never has gone away completely.
You should be treated correctly and probably for a long time (several months 2-3 times per week) and after I can say if it will go away or not. However the antibiogram is very important because it shows the sensibility of the bacter from the antibiotics specifically and for this you should discuss with your doctor.
The fact that you last year are not feeling well it might be an important cause of the pseudomonas however it depends and from other causes (comorbidities if you have)
You just do the treatment and see how your situation will turn.
