Brief Answer:
MUCUS IN STOOLS

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor"service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX

Normally mucus is present in stools but it is not visible. If stool has visible mucus, it is abnormal.
There can be multiple reasons of it but most common cause is infection of gut(called colitis).
This can be due to eating of contaminated food and most common culprits are bacteria like salmonella and shigella. This requires specific antibiotic course.

Other possible reason can be inflammatory bowel disease (IBS) in which there is inflammation and ulceration of bowel loops and it secretes large amount of mucus which is passed out in stools. There may be admixed blood.

Make some dietary changes like avoid spicy, heavy and greasy foods, keep yourself well hydrated, have rich fiber bland diet, increase intake of yogurt and have commercially available probiotics(This would replenish the good bacteria in gut).

If the things do not improve, visit a gastroenterologist who might procure your blood test, stool test and stool culture before prescribing you specific treatment and antibiotics.
At times endoscopy of colon(colonoscopy) is required.

Hope that I have answered your query.
If you have any doubts, please let me know.
Regards

Okay but it wants me to pay another $20? So basically a few weeks back I had what I would consider a large amount of mucus. It was very noticeable. After that I had plenty of bowl movements with no mucos or very little but when it’s little amounts it’s still noticble but I have to really look at my stool to see it. It’s like a whiteish cleanish complexion but has now shown much smaller amounts then the initial scare. I wouldn’t say I’m experiencing and pain or any other symptoms.

Brief Answer:
MUCUS IN STOOLS

Detailed Answer:
Hi...
It seems that your infection is getting cleared up.

Follow the dietary restrictions which I have advised earlier.
Drink plenty of water and oral fluids and have a soft diet cooked at home only.
Maintain hand hygiene.

In the next few days, monitor the amount of mucus secreted and if the issue remained unresolved, then you may need to visit a gastroenterologist for further work up.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards
