Question: Hi I'm a 35 year old male. Generally healthy. Right now I'm at work and just awhile ago I noticed that when I take a deep breath my heart hurts and I'm worried. I drank two big cans of energy drink last night and am wondering if that might have anything to do with it. I also didn't sleep well last night. Maybe 5 hours. I was fine all day though. This just started around 4 pm. I'm taking shallow breaths right now to avoid taking a deep breath. It also seems like it's easier to breathe when I bend over forward. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Hello!

Welcome on - Ask a Doctor - service!

I passed carefully through your concern and would like to explain that your symptomatology is not specific for a cardiac ischemia issue.

Your chest pain is modulated by respiration and posture and this fact is more in favor of an extra-cardiac disorder: a pleural or pericardial (the fibrous layer surrounding the heart) inflammation could be an option.

In addition a musculoskeletal disorder may another potential cause.

Coming to this point, I recommend using an anti-inflammatory drug, such as Naproxen, Ibuprofen in order to´relieve the pain and treat inflammation.

If the symptoms persist, then I recommend asking medical assistance to the nearest ER service at your living area or discuss with your attending physician for an appointment.

An ECG, chest X ray film and cardiac ultrasound and lab tests (complete blood count, PCR, CPK, etc.) would be helpful in the differential diagnosis of your complaints.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above mentioned issues.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
