Management is supportive

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Most often children suffer from viral gastroenteritis which make them pass loose stools. The cause does not need to be treated and is self limiting. There is no need to give antibiotics in such cases and I would insist you to refrain from it unless the stool is blood stained. However, the lost water and salts need to be replenished. ORS (oral rehydration solution) is the mainstay of treatment and needs to be given. A home based alternative would be to mix six (6) level teaspoons of Sugar, Half (1/2) level teaspoon of Salt, One Litre of clean drinking water i.e. 5 cupfuls (each cup about 200 ml.) and to give it sip by sip. If the child is otherwise active and playful you need not worry.

Also give curd or yogurt since it contains plenty of beneficial bacteria and should help. Tomorrow you can fetch and give zinc supplements like Zinconia Syr 10 ml once daily for the next 10 days. You need not worry. It should gradually return back to normal.

If your child has fever with temperature more than 100°F, you need to give paracetamol or acetaminophen (P-250, Crocin or Tylenol) to it bring down. Also use tepid sponging.

Please be patient. It may take a few days for the recovery to occur. It should spontaneously resolve in 5-7 days.

Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.

Regards
