Question: Hi I’m currently taking pivmecillinam 200mg 3 times a day for a urine infection. I now have a ear infection and have amoxicillin 500mg on hand. Is it safe to take these 2 antibiotics together? Thanks

Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I understand your concern.

Pivmecillinam 200 mg is an antibiotic in the family of penicillin antibiotics.

It is primarily used to treat urinary tract infections.

This antibiotic has a wide spectrum of antibacterial activity.

It can also be effective in an ear infection.

Amoxicillin is also a penicillin type antibiotic.

So, I don't recommend taking Pivmecillinam with Amoxicillin because of overdose side effects.

I suggest you to continue Pivmecillinam 200 mg three times a day.

I also recommend taking painkillers such as Ibuprofen in case of ear pain.

Warm compresses can also be helpful to relieve the symptoms.
