Hi! I’ve Had A Pretty Bad Cough For About 3

Question: Hi! I’ve had a pretty bad cough for about 3 weeks now—it’s a wet cough that occasionally produces phlegm (thick white or very light yellow). I’ve also been congested but have not noticed any other symptoms aside from the cough and congestion/runny nose. I have reddish bumps along the back of my throat, and small (almost the size of the tip of a needle) white spots on my tonsils—I know for a fact theyre not tonsil stones as I’ve experienced tonsil stones in the past, and I don’t believe it’s strep or bronchitis as i’ve been in close proximity to many people including my boyfriend and ive yet to hear of anyone getting sick or developing the symptoms that i have. When this cough happens, its more aggressive at night and i can feel it deep within my chest. It’s usually in spurts of 3 (COUGH cough cough, COUGH cough cough) and can get violent enough to make me gag and almost vomit...it sometimes causes a burning sensation within my chest as well. I thought it was just allergies at first, but it seems to be unwavering and continuously bothersome throughout the last 3 weeks ive had symptoms..
Brief Answer:
It's an allergic cough
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome in Ask the Doctor
I can understand your concern
As you explain the situation in my opinion this is an allergic cough. The fact that during the night it gets worse support even more this fact. If you don't have fever or other sign and symptoms such as difficulty in breathing or chest pain than no worries. You just take an antihistaminic orally twice for some days such as Telfast 180 mg and the cough for sure will improve or disappear.
