Question: Hi, My blood pressure is 120/82, with heart rate 90, oxygen level 88, but I am still having shortness of breath. It hurts in my chest if I try to breath deeply. I went to my doctors the other day and was put on Symbicort and Ventolin. At that time I had a EKG ran and it was good. The doctor stated my lungs were clear. She also stated I had an enlarged atrium. Is that causing my breathing problems?

Hello!

Welcome on - Ask a Doctor - service!

I understand your concern and would explain that the best practical way to confirm or exclude any cardiac implication in your breathing problems would be performing a cardiac ultrasound.

That way would be clarified the exact reason of any possible atrial enlargement (valvular disorder, underlying cardiomyopathy, etc.), which could be a reason for your breathing problems.

It would provide valuable information also about pulmonary artery pressure and investigating any reason of possible pulmonary hypertension.

From the other side, if your breathing problems are conditioned by chest pain, may be pleural or pericardial layers inflammation could be the reason.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above mentioned issues.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of any further questions, feel free to ask me again.

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
