Question: Hi, My dad, after flu like symptoms, is hospitalized due to muscle pain, fever, numbness and severe dizziness and inability to walk or balance. His brain tomography was clean. Doctor diognosed him with vestibular neuritis. I attached the picture of his medicine. ( Covid test is negative). They also gave him some prednisone in the ivy. However, since he is diabetic and prednisone increased his blood sugar to 300+. They stopped using it. We have been in the hospital for 3 days. He is able turn around the bed. He can symmetrically move his legs and his arms and can pull and push. He clearly has the strength. He can follow my finger with his eyes just fine. However, he is not able to walk. He can barely stand for a few seconds and can’t take steps. It has been more than 3 days now. His crp was so high and he isn’t getting any antibiotics since his inflammation isn’t bacterial. He has type 2 diabetes and he got operated on his right leg due to blood clots about a month ago( dvt cleaning). I am really worried that he cannot walk. please provide me with your thoughts and suggest further treatment options. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
A correct diagnosis is mandatory. Treatment is mainly supportive.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to " Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query and here is my advice.

Since there was a fever, an infection is very likely.

A brain MRI may give more information about any possible diagnosis such as encephalitis, etc. in such a case.

A spinal tap (lumbar puncture) with subsequent cerebrospinal fluid examination also may be necessary.

Treatment, until a correct diagnosis is mainly supportive, oxygenation, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels should be maintained within normal ranges.

Antibiotics and antivirals also may be considered to be used.

The drugs you provided are a supplement for the brain and antivertiginous.

Discuss with a Neurologist for these issues.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.
