Question: Hi,

My father (75+ years) is having suddenly heavy loose motion. We are giving continuous electrolytes (ORS) but its not giving any relief. Anytime he eat anything or drink (even ORS), he starts getting stomach ache and immediately defecate. He is having slight chills, very minor fever. Is there any remedy we can give him other than ORS.

Brief Answer:
Medicaments for stomach cramps and diarrhoea may help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query.

Medications that may help in such cases include loperamide for diarrhea, hyoscine butyl-bromide for stomach cramps, etc.

However, it may be an infection of the gastroenteric tract, so, antibiotics may be necessary as well.

This possibility should be evaluated by your father's Doctor.

If diarrhea does not stop, dehydration via intravenous fluids and electrolytes may be necessary also.

I hope you found the answer helpful.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.
