Question: Hi,

My husband has otosclerosis in both ears and underwent Stapedotomy on 19th April in his right ear. The package in the ear has been removed today. But there is no improvement at all in the hearing. We understand usually hearing will be improved immediately. But that is not the case for him. Is this expected in some patients? Are there chances for the hearing to improve? Attaching the hearing results. The doctor marked the very slight improvement in blue.

Detailed Answer:
Hii. After stapedotomy operation the ear is generally packed with gel foam. The gel foam is taken out after 1 week but many surgeons wait for the gel foam to get absorbed. So it will take at least 1-2 months to comment on the hearing status. During stapedotomy the ear was lifted to operate inside. So it takes at least 1-2 months for healing of tympanic membrane. So it's better you wait for another 2 months before commenting on hearing status. Also ask the ent surgeon to mark the hearing status before and after operation as it seems here that hearing has improved in the tests.

Thanks for the response doctor

One correction in my earlier query is that the date of surgery is 15th April.

I am attaching the before and after test results.

Also he has been prescribed prednisolONE 5mg tablets.
The dosage is 12 tables first couple of days, followed by 10 tablets next couple of days, 8 tablets next and so one in a reducing dosage for 2weeks. Is the high dosage a cause for concern? Any side effects that we should be aware of?

Also my husband is still getting a feeling of dizziness every now and then. Is that normal?

Detailed Answer:
Hii. Audiogram is almost same before and after surgery. Please wait for few months and then reassess hearing. Many doctors prescribe steroids to reduce inflammation of the surgery. Slowly reduce the steroids as said by doctor. Don't stop it suddenly. Check blood sugar and blood pressure. Mild form of giddiness will be present after stapedotomy. You can ask your doctor whether there is any need for any antivertigo tablets for few days. Follow the precautions after stapedotomy as said by surgeon.
