Question: Hi, My mother's right hand thumb nail has broken and its still in the thumb only. There is no pain but its not falling off also. Every day she puts plaster over it so that it should not shake and create trouble. Is there any better way to remove it or any other solution?

Brief Answer:
Putting plaster should be avoided in the first place...

Detailed Answer:
Hello there,
Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...

Well, firstly, the area should be left bare open and avid putting any form of plaster upon it as it traps moisture and delays the healing process further...Keep the area dry most importantly...

It may take several weeks to even months (depending mostly on the extent and type of injury) for the new nail to grow back...However, the exact form of management can only be ascertained after a clinical check-up by a Gen. Surgeon...

Please go ahead and get her thoroughly checked up by the General Surgeon and proceed accordingly...

Take Care
Kind Regards
